Kenny Werner: "Effortless Mastery"
includes participation by the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Youth Band

Sponsored by Sedona Jazz on the Rocks.  FREE TO THE PUBLIC - Thursday, Sept. 25th, 2008, 3:30-5:30 pm in the Great Room. For all those wishing to remove their own barriers to creativity in life and the arts, “Effortless Mastery” will speak to you and offer tools toward a fully-integrated, and authentic experience. The empowering concepts presented are applicable to every profession, aspiration or life-style where there is a need for free, flowing, and effortless thinking.  Throughout his career, Kenny Werner has approached jazz as a new means of creativity and expression. A prolific and progressive jazz educator, he is also the author of several books published by Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc, including “Effortless Mastery”, arguably the most important book on the creative process since “Free Play”. A rethinking of not only the technical aspects of creativity, but also the spiritual aspects, the "Effortless Mastery" method applies Eastern philosophy, Christian and Jewish mysticism and ancient disciplines such as yoga and tai chi to help remove blocks to free, creative expression.

At the age of eleven, Werner recorded his first single on a live television appearance with a 15 piece orchestra playing stride piano.  From 1962 his career has taken him around the world playing and recording with the Mel Lewis Orchestra and many others like  Toots Thielemans, Archie Shepp, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Lou Rawls and Bobby McFerrin to name a few.

Kenny Werner is a highly versatile artist whose intent is to loose himself in the bliss of music.  His style is wonderfully fresh and imaginative and he plays with a zest that filters through the discipline of a classically honed technique.

The current Kenny Werner trio features the rhythm section of Ari Hoenig on drums and Johannes Weidenmueller on bass.

Werner’s latest Blue Note recording; Lawn Chair Society will be available at the concert for signing.  “The closer you listen, the higher Kenny Werner’s Lawn Chair Society will rise on your year’s-best list.  Firm and delicate, electric and acoustic, gentle and daring,  it integrates the possibilities of new technology.”  www.PopMatters.com
