Dances of Ecstasy

a Film by Michelle Mahrer and Nicole Ma.
And Trance Dance after the film!

Wilbert Alix
will present the film Dances of Ecstasy ("Best Documentary" at the Hollywood Spiritual Film Festival in September 2004) followed by an evening TranceDance.  Thursday, March 1, 2007, 6:30 to 10 pm in the Great Room at Sedona Creative Life Center.  Tickets are $15, or pre-register early for $10 by calling 282-6903.

The film Dances of Ecstasy is an award-winning sensory journey into the world of trance and ecstasy that connects dancers from Manhattan to Morocco.  The film makers visited traditional and modern day rituals around the globe to discover what is the altered state experience which people seek through dance.  In these rituals, thousands of young people at an all night techno dance party in an Australian forest pulse to the same beat as Whirling Dervishes from Turkey, Orisha priestesses from Nigeria and Brazil, and shaman healers from the Kalahari and Korea.

Dances of Ecstasy

Dances of Ecstasy is a sensory journey into the mesmerizing world of trance and ecstasy that binds dancers from Manhattan to Morocco. The film makers traveled to traditional and modern day rituals to discover what is the altered state experience which people seek through dance. In these rituals, Whirling Dervishes from Turkey, Orisha priestesses from Nigeria and Brazil, and shaman healers from the Kalahari and Korea, pulse to the same beat as thousands of young people at an all night techno dance party in an Australian forest.

Dances of Ecstasy celebrates the universal human experience where rhythm and dance unite us. The film explores the many levels of trance and discovers that what links them together is the human need to connect with a spiritual dimension – a living part of many traditional cultures, which modern culture seeks to recapture. It is a visual and aural feast for the senses, an innovative documentary blending exciting dance rituals, evocative imagery, interviews and a spellbinding global music soundtrack featuring original music recorded on location in Africa, Morocco, Korea, Turkey and Brazil mixed with electronica and percussion by composers Ollie Olsen, Kavisha Mazzella, Ray Perreira, Michael Barker and Waterland. The film is an inspiration to dance, and to reconnect with a sense of the sacred that many have lost touch with in modern life.

The film was first released at the Melbourne International Arts Festival in combination with a dance party and over the past year these events have enjoyed considerable success. It has just returned from a sensational USA tour with sell out screenings followed by large scale global music dance events in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. The DANCES OF ECSTASY events are uplifting experiences which bring people together from different cultures, communities and ages, to celebrate our common humanity through dancing. The film recently won Best Documentary at the Hollywood Spiritual Film Festival and it has also screened at numerous festivals including Santa Fe Film Festival USA, Ultima Festival Norway, Kinodance in St Petersburg, and Dance Camera West Festival in Los Angeles.
